Careers and Post-16

The careers education, information, advice and guidance (CEIAG) programme at Brockington College plays a vital role in preparing our young people for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life. Our programme is designed to be progressive from Year 7 through to Year 11, giving students the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to make informed choices at 14–16 and beyond.

We aim to raise aspirations, challenge stereotypes and open students’ eyes to the wide range of pathways available to them. Through high-quality careers education and guidance, we encourage every student to explore their interests, develop their talents and work towards courses or careers that inspire them.

Careers education is delivered using a variety of methods and is supported by extra-curricular activities, employer encounters, enrichment opportunities and PSHCE lessons. This ensures students not only learn about careers in the classroom but also experience real-world contexts that help bring their learning to life.

We regularly evaluate the impact of our CEIAG programme against the Gatsby Benchmarks, an evidence-based framework that defines world-class careers guidance for young people This ensures that we meet national standards and continually strengthen the support we provide for  the futures of our students.

Post-16 Information Evening 2026

During their time at Brockington, students have the opportunity to meet and speak with a wide range of post-16 providers, employers and universities. These encounters are designed to help students begin thinking about their next steps after leaving Brockington College and to develop an understanding of the knowledge, skills and qualifications needed for future success.

As all young people are now required to remain in some form of education or training until the age of 18, these opportunities are invaluable in helping students appreciate the different pathways available to them once they complete their GCSEs.

A Post-16 Evening will take place for current year 9 and 10 students in the autumn term. A provisional date of 8 October will be confirmed nearer the time and will run from 5.00 pm to 7.00 pm. Attendance at this event will be important as it is vital for young people to start engaging with their aspirations early, exploring the full range of possibilities and beginning to shape a vision for their future.

Post-16

The law states that all students have to stay in learning until at least their 18th birthday. Students can choose from:

  • a full time course at a college studying for A -levels or a vocational qualification
  • learning while you work on an apprenticeship, traineeship or study programme
  • spend 20 hours or more a week working or volunteering, while in part-time education or training.

Current Year 10 students will be  issued with their usernames and passwords in order to start to put together their post-16 applications via the ‘Positive Steps @ 16  website at the beginning of October 2026.

A video demonstration of how the website and application process works for parents and carers, as well as a user guide will also be available for them to refer to. Please note that the demonstration materials will look slightly different to the live site as the demo is a national resource, whereas the website is branded as ‘Positive Steps’ at local level.

Additional support is available through our careers advisor and the pastoral team for those who would like or need additional time or support to research post-16 options and complete applications.

If you have any queries about this process, please do not hesitate to contact the year 11 team or our CEIAG coordinator on 0116 2863722 via school reception.
