The English department seeks to promote a lifelong love of language and literature. English has a pre-eminent place in education and in society. We are committed to providing a high-quality education in English that teaches students to speak and write fluently so that they can communicate their ideas and emotions to others, and through their reading and listening, allows others to communicate with them. Our desire is for students to have a chance to develop culturally, emotionally, intellectually, socially and spiritually. Literature, especially, plays a key role in such development. Reading also enables students both to acquire knowledge and to build on what they already know. All the skills of language are essential in allowing young people to engage fully in the communities they are a part of.

We believe that all students can achieve success despite prior attainment and therefore we teach English in mixed ability classes throughout Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4. The English department seeks to always stretch and challenge all students whilst also providing the necessary support to our range of learners. We are helped in this endeavour by working closely with teaching assistants and the SEND team.

We want Brockington students to achieve the best grades they can when they leave the school so that they have maximum choices available for their next steps. The department’s knowledge and expertise in preparing pupils for their GCSEs discretely underpins the skills and knowledge that are taught and assessed in Key Stage 3.

English teaching at Brockington College within Key Stage 3 is firmly linked to the National Curriculum programme of study, therefore the schemes of work are rooted on skills-based objectives that support the teaching of speaking and listening, reading and writing. The schemes of work for Key Stage 4 are based upon the Edexcel 2.0 syllabuses.
