Modern Foreign Languages

At Brockington College, we are passionate about opening doors to the wider world through languages. Students have two lessons a week in Years 7–9 and three lessons a week in Years 10–11. All students begin their journey with French in Year 7 and have the opportunity to continue this language to GCSE.

In language lessons, students develop their abilities in listening, speaking, reading and writing across a wide range of engaging topics. At Key Stage 3, the curriculum is built around phonics, vocabulary and grammar, woven into themes that help bring the language to life. At Key Stage 4, we follow the AQA GCSE French course, enabling students to expand their knowledge, build confidence, and develop a deeper awareness of global contexts. Alongside the language itself, students gain valuable insights into the culture, traditions and diversity of French-speaking countries and territories.

Studying French at Brockington enriches students’ cultural capital, strengthening their understanding of different perspectives while also deepening their appreciation of their own language and identity. This prepares them to thrive as global citizens in an increasingly connected world.

A highlight of our provision is the annual Year 8 residential trip to France, where students practise their language skills in real-life situations, experience French traditions and cuisine, and develop a genuine appreciation of other nationalities and cultures. In addition, we are able to support students who study other languages outside of school to sit GCSE qualifications, helping them gain formal recognition for their skills.
