Performing Arts

In the Performing Arts at Brockington College, we aim to nurture students’ creativity through music and drama while building their confidence, self-expression and teamwork skills. Our curriculum is rooted in practical activities, with theoretical knowledge taught alongside to give students the foundation needed to progress to further study. All students have a lesson each week in both music and drama in Years 7, 8 and 9, and at Key Stage 4 they can choose to continue their journey through GCSE or BTEC courses.

Performance opportunities are at the heart of our provision. Each year, students can take part in a variety of events, from informal showcases to our annual full-scale musical, open to all in Years 7 to 10. Whether performing on stage, working backstage or helping with technical production, students take increasing ownership, and by opening night are able to run the show with minimal staff involvement. Past productions have included Fame, Hairspray, Sweeney Todd and Seussical. Alongside this, smaller events such as open mic nights, our Christmas showcase and contributions to church services give students further opportunities to share their talents.

Our extra-curricular programme is designed to be inclusive, offering opportunities for all students regardless of skill level or prior experience. The Key Stage 3 Drama Club allows students to develop their acting skills in both scripted and devised work, while our orchestra and vocal group welcome all musicians to perform a wide range of classical and popular music each year. These experiences are enriched by regular trips to see professional productions, which in recent years have included Matilda in London, La Bohème at the Royal Opera House and The Woman in Black at the Curve Theatre in Leicester.

Through this balance of classroom learning, extra-curricular opportunities and live performance experiences, the Performing Arts at Brockington embody our vision of learning to live life to the full. Students are inspired to develop a love of creativity, collaboration and expression that they carry with them long after they leave school.
